GLP-1s & SGLT-2s

Glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists are a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar, digestion, and appetite.

Our bodies naturally produce GLP-1 but synthetic versions have been developed to help aide those who are diabetic and obese.

All of the current GLP-1 medications can lead to weight loss but it will depend on the drug you use and your dose. The most popular medications are injectables.

The most commonly used GLP-1’s are:

  • Trulicity

  • Ozempic

  • Saxenda

  • Rybelsus

These kinds of drugs mimic the action of a hormone called glucagon-like-peptide 1. When you blood sugar levels start to rise after you eat, these drugs stimulate your body to produce more insulin. That extra insulin helps to lower your blood sugar. Lowering your blood sugar levels is helpful if you suffer from type 2 diabetes and need help controlling it.

There have also been studies that show GLP-1s help to curb your hunger. They slow the movement of food from the stomach to your small intestine; which means you feel full faster and longer, so you are less likely to overeat.

Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors have a similar effect. The most common that you may have heard of are:

  • Farxiga

  • Jardiance

Research shows that some of the medications from both groups provide other benefits:

  • Lower the risk of heart disease, such as heart failure, stroke and kidney disease.

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol levels improve

It’s important to understand that you also will need to put in the work to see progress. Diet, exercise and lifestyle changes also play a key role in weight loss and controlling your diseases.

Speak with a healthcare professional before starting any medication.
